HandyHumans’ 5 Most Asked Questions

1. Do you offer better rates if I pay by cash?

The short answer is no, we do not. We invest a lot of time, effort, and resources into creating a quote. Our estimators are extremely qualified, and they work out the best rates for you taking into consideration materials, labour and craftsmanship. The prices they reach to are final unless external factors affect that. Once you accept a quote, we will send an invoice for a 50% deposit (requirement on all jobs). You will have our bank details on the invoice and can pay us directly by bank transfer. We encourage bank transfer payments as there are no extra fees associated. We accept cash payments only on quotes over £100 and we charge a collection fee of £10 for such payments. Please do let us know your preferred way of paying before we quote for a job as there are additional charges associated with online credit card payments (service charge of 1,5 %).

2. Why do you charge a fee for an inspection?
During an inspection our estimators not only check the problem with your property (what broke) but also find the root (why it broke) so they can ensure the same thing will not happen again. Our HandyHumans carefully inspect the problem, and this takes a lot of time and patience. They document all the information for future reference, provide a quote for repairing the damages but also for fixing the root. Sometimes, multiple people are needed for an inspection (e.g., Estimator, plumber, electrician, roofer etc.) and the fee covers their time and their professional expertise.
3. Why do you charge VAT?
To keep it short: because it is the law. VAT stands for Value Added Tax. It is a sales tax charged by VAT registered traders on the value of the goods or services supplied to their customers. The standard rate of VAT is 20%, however, certain items are charged at lower rates (for example children’s clothing is charged at the rate of 0% whereas household fuel, such as gas and electricity are charged at the reduced rate of 5%).
4. Why do you charge differently compared to other builders?
If you have ever completed construction works at your property, you probably already know about the potential difference in price that various contractors provide. Nowhere is the saying “you get what you pay for” truer than in construction. The reason for this is that different people operate in different ways. A too-good-to-be-true price might come with other compromises such as not following building code regulations and having permits, ignoring zoning regulations and legal/environmental considerations during construction and so on. Another reason for big cost differences is that a lot of contractors have no idea what is on the market and simply guess when pricing projects they intend to complete. When hiring a contractor make sure that you receive a fixed price proposal (that includes in detailed writing all the work about to be carried out) and not an estimate or a bid.

5. Why do you not book a job during the same day as the viewing/inspection?

Due to all the planning involved in starting a new job (no matter how big or small), we are not able to provide same day bookings for jobs. A lot of thought, effort and planning goes into all our jobs and most of the time, schedules are confirmed a couple of weeks ahead. Please get in touch with our customer service team who will provide available dates for completing any new works you might require. However, it is important to note that no date will be confirmed until we receive the deposit. Moreover, some projects are dependent on cooperative weather, which drives up seasonal demand for certain trades like painting, concrete, and dirt work. We promise to work with you every step of the way to establish clear schedule expectations and a realistic timeline for completion.
